Southport Lifeboats – Elaine Almond

Southport Offshore Rescue Trust is an independent charity that provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around the Southport Coast. In the 1980’s, after a series of tragedies off the Southport coast, bereaved relatives and local people campaigned for a new lifeboat service for the town.

The current Southport Lifeboat called Heather White, covers an area between the River Mersey and the River Ribble and up to 25 miles offshore. The Southport ILB, Christopher Taylor, provides cover for inshore or shallow waters and Southport Marine Lake.
The Southport Lifeboat also operates three ATV Quad bikes, which are used to cover the beach, sand dunes, marshes and woodland area. The newest addition to the team is the use of UAS (drones) to help locate casualties. Elaine will talk about the brand new Southport Lifeboat Station on Marine Drive.

The Future of Formby

The National Trust are inviting the public to ‘Get Involved In The Future Of Formby’. Below is a message from them, together with a link to their project page.

We know that National Trust Formby is a much-loved nature haven. It’s a habitat for rare wildlife, as well as a place that many people love to visit.

It’s also a unique and constantly-changing coastline. We’re committed to working with nature to restore and protect this special place – and that means putting new plans together as we look to the future.

We have a new proposal for Victoria Road at Formby that includes removing the unsightly rubble from the beach and making some important changes to car parking. We have published these proposals on our website, including a map of the proposed changes that you can download. We want to listen to and involve National Trust members, visitors and local people in our conversations about this conservation work, so we would really welcome your feedback on this proposal. Head to our website to find out more detail, read more about our public consultation events at Formby in recent years, and share your thoughts.

Formby Nature Reserve

Red Squirrel in Formby Nature Reserve - SoFA
Red Squirrel in Formby Nature Reserve

Formby Nature Reserve is a popular spot in Merseyside which attracts a lot of visitors all through the year. As you walk around the reserve it is possible to see red squirrels running around.

SoFA donate money to Formby, during 2022 we gave them £5000 towards the rejuvenation of Wicks lake. In the past we donated money for them to purchase new tools as well as £2000, which allowed the Rangers to purchase walkie talkies that helps them to keep in touch with each other.

Formby rangers arrange monthly guided walks for the public as well as interaction with local schools. If you fancy an informative walk at Formby you need to check their noticeboard and their social media sites.
