Bury Market and East Lancs Railway

We will visit the award winning Bury Market which has plenty to offer visitors. The market dates back to the 1440’s and is renowned for its diverse mix of stalls which makes it one of the largest in the North of England. Bury also has many fine buildings, including the Fusilier Museum. Immerse yourself in the history of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and explore 300 years of their history. There are also the Art Museum, Sculpture Centre and Transport Museum. Bury has many cafes to offer those seeking lunch.

In the afternoon we will have a trip on the East Lancashire Railway from Bury to Rawtenstall, traversing the Lancashire countryside. We then journey back to Bury before our return to Southport.

Please note this outing will involve some walking.

The coach will pick up at Churchtown, Southport, Birkdale, Ainsdale and Formby. See SoFA Spring Magazine for details. The cost to include train ride, travel and gratuities.

Holiday to Harrogate

A Holiday in Harrogate organised by Ellen Smith Tours staying at the Old Swan Hotel. As we travel to Harrogate we visit Samlesbury Hall, a Medieval stately home dating from 1325. There will be a Guided Tour followed by an enjoyable Soup and Sandwich lunch. We expect to arrive at the Old Swan by 4pm.

  • Explore York independently
  • RHS Harlow Carr
  • NT Nunnington Hall
  • Newby Hall near Ripon
  • NT Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal
  • Trip on Keighley and Worth Valley Railway

  • Carvery tea at the Calf’s Head at Worston

My life in the Path Lab – Peter Gordon

Peter Gordon has many years experience working in Pathology Laboratories and will give a light hearted talk about his life In the ‘Path Lab’. It is a medical laboratory that focuses on the study and analysis of bodily fluids, tissues, cells, and blood to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of diseases. They also have an important role to play in preparing for Blood Transfusions. Pathology Labs play a crucial role in healthcare by providing essential diagnostic information to doctors.

Manchester Monastery

The Church and Friary of St Francis, known locally as Manchester Monastery, is a Grade 2 listed former priory in Gorton, Manchester. It was designed by the noted Victorian architect Edward Welby Pugin and built 1866 -1872. Manchester Monastery is a noted example of Gothic Revival architecture.

Manchester Monastery is an extraordinary place to visit. It is considered to be E W Pugin’s greatest architectural masterpiece known as Manchester’s ‘Taj Mahal’

Many thousands of people say that visiting the Monastery is inspiring and uplifting. Come and experience the wonderful atmosphere for yourself.

Enjoy tea/coffee and biscuits on arrival, a private talk, and a buffet lunch. There will then be free time to explore the Monastery, garden and shop.

The cost will include travel, morning tea/coffee, biscuits, a private talk, buffet lunch and gratuities.

The pickup points are Churchtown, Southport, Birkdale, Ainsdale and Formby.

Speaker Meeting – John Stoddern

This is our second Autumn Speaker meeting, where John Stoddern will give an interesting talk on the Anglican Cathedral of Liverpool. John is a Guide for the Anglican Cathedral which is one of two Cathedrals in the city.They are located either end of the aptly named Hope Street and are vastly different in architecture but both majestic and beautiful. The Anglican  Cathedral is of the Anglican Diocese of Liverpool, built on St James’s Mount and is the seat of the Bishop of Liverpool.
